The Trip To Massachusetts Was a BLAST
Photo Gallery By: Jasmin and Jillian By: Jasmin and Jillian,Added Value Youth On Saturday November 4th four Added Value youth and one Added Value staff headed out to make a trip to Massachusetts. We went there with plenty of goals to complete, such as meet new people, find out about other organizations and have fun. We were also ready to answer questions people had for us and ready to share ideas about our organization, and what we do that other organizations wanted to know about.
Our first stop in Massachusetts was a BLAST meeting hosted by an organization called the Food Project, who’s goal is to create social change through agriculture. At the meeting their were several organizations and plenty of questions to be asked and answered. We answered all the questions people had for us, such as how do we advertise our organization. We also got plenty of information and new ideas for our organization from others, including learning new ways to get neighborhood youth and other the community members involved, and activities we can do to bring our diverse community together. We then took a tour of Nuestras Raices farm. Nuestras Raices is an organization similar to Added Value, except for the fact they have a restaurant. That night we stayed at Food Bank Farm, which is one of the largest CSAs in the country, with a mission of helping those in need. They also had excellent soil and really cool people.
The next day we went to Seeds of Solidarity, whos' mission is to bring to life the connection between environmental and social justice. They have solar power (energy from the sun) and they have greenhouses named after people that inspired them, like Mahatma Ghandi and Cesar Chavez.
The next day we went to CiderDays at a local farm. This was not on our itinerary, but we were really glad we attended it. We drank plenty of cider, ate many cider donuts and caramel apples.
Our last stop was Hampshire College, (where Phil Shipman and Ian Marvy both went to school). which was a cool college with a farm on it and 800 acres of land. We enjoyed being on the college and seeing all the cool things that had to offer we also liked the animals. Next we headed home, happy that we learned new things, We enjoyed going on our trip and all the new things it taught us. It was a new experience for the youth and even the staff at Added Value.
