Learning, Playing on Red Hook Community Farm

Hi My name is Jonathan, and I have been a youth participant at Added Value since since the July 5th 2006.

Saturday September 30, 2006 was a magnificent day in the history of the Red Hook Community Farm. We hosted loyal customers; parents and busy children from the Carroll Gardens/ Cobble Hill Play Group, and NYU graduate students studying nutrition (That's them in the photo above). For many of the college students it was their first time on any farm, never mind an urban farm. The students went on a tour of the Farm led by their professor, FaTai, and were having a “hands on” lesson about nutrition. Not only is FaTai a college professor but he is also a long time supporter of Added Value who has given much of his time and effort volunteering on the Farm.

While the students were having their class on the Farm the children from the playgroup where out and about having fun doing farm work. Of course as all of this was going on we were still running our weekly farmers market trying to sell all that we have grown on the farm. That day Jasmin and I went around taking photographs of all of the events that were happening as the day progressed.

It was a great experience watching all of the children run around and have fun on the farm. Not only were the children interesting but also watching FaTai’s group learning about nutrition first hand was a very unique and stimulating experience.
